Fulfilment and Satisfaction

Henri Nouwen was a world-renowned academic, admired for his intellect and influence. Yet beneath the surface of his success, he felt restless, unseen, and deeply lonely. I meet many business leaders today, some highly impactful, who echo the same feelings. Though they receive admiration and attention, something remains unmet.

In the 1980s, Nouwen made a radical choice. He stepped away from the spotlight and joined the L’Arche community in Daybreak, Canada, where people with and without disabilities live together. There, he became the full-time caregiver for Adam Arnett, a young man who could neither speak nor walk.

Through this quiet, hidden relationship, Henri discovered something he had never found in all his achievements: the healing power of presence. Adam didn’t care about credentials or influence. He needed patience, tenderness, and love. He simply enjoyed Henri being with him—no performance, no expectations, just a shared life.

This is a powerful reminder for us. We long to heal the world through business, and while ambition and excellence have their place, they can’t fix every wound, not even our own. What matters most isn’t how much we achieve, but how deeply we love. Not performance, but presence.

I hope you, too, find an “Adam”—a person or place where who you are matters more than what you do. Where you can simply be, and celebrate the deeply fulfilling simplicity, kindness, and friendship that make life truly meaningful.

May Jesus be that place for you as well, alongside a few cherished relationships here on earth. I’ve come to know Him as a true friend in this way and I pray you will too.
